Heat pumps are a renewable technology that takes the available heat from the ground or air surrounding a property and increases it to a more useful temperature for use in the home. This renewable source of heat can be used to create warm air or water (for space and central heating) as well as hot water (for both central heating and domestic hot water supply). This process delivers green, low-cost, energy-saving heating and hot water all year round.
There are several types of heat pumps including air to water heat pumps and exhaust heat pumps, but the most common heat pumps installed in Ireland and Northern Ireland are Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) (aka geothermal heat pumps) and air source heat pumps. Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) use pipes which are buried in the garden to extract heat from the ground. A ground source heat pump circulates a mixture of water and antifreeze around a loop of pipe, called a ground loop, which is buried in your garden. Heat from the ground is absorbed into the fluid and then passes through a heat exchanger into the heat pump. The ground stays at a fairly constant temperature under the surface, so the heat pump can be used throughout the year. An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Air source heat pumps are usually easier to install than ground source as they don’t need any trenches or drilling, but they are often less efficient than ground source heat pumps.Water source heat pumps can be used to provide heating in homes near to rivers, streams and lakes.Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally.
Heat pumps can deliver a number of benefits:Lower your fuel bills
- Lower your home’s carbon emissions
- Does not require fuel deliveries
- Little maintenance required
